This call invites applications from research groups, including the RDA groups, to demonstrate how RDA-developed data sharing concepts and solutions can be reused, optimised and implemented in the EOSC context, particularly in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Portal Catalogue and Marketplace. EOSC is building a federated infrastructure to support Europe’s data output and works to enable the discovery and re-use of FAIR research data. In this context RDA plays a key role to underpin new and existing pathways to sharing research data. Many specifications already exist in RDA for data sharing and these can be refined and further developed via this call.

A wide range of activities – including promotional, analysis and technical documentation activities – can be funded through this call (described in more detail in section “What types of activities can be funded?”).

Context and Background

RDA provides an open forum where solutions are discussed and experiences are shared via its global community. EOSC is a new concept for many research communities and work still needs to be done to understand and enable data  sharing and re-use across the research lifecycle, by making content FAIR and discoverable via a federated system such as EOSC. RDA is running a series of calls, as part of the EOSC Future project, to further enable integration and take up of EOSC services. The purpose of these RDA Open Calls is to engage the data sharing community from a bottom up approach to contribute their know-how to EOSC. This call specifically targets small projects to show implementation and take-up of existing outputs and specifications, specifically those that the RDA community has enabled. The call aims to support and encourage  adoption of existing RDA outputs and recommendations which can benefit the community around EOSC and to promote new examples and lessons learnt. See a list of currently funded RDA/EOSC Future Open Call projects here.

The scope is wide-ranging and projects should be short, and focused for a period of three months.

Enhancing Usability and Contributability of RDA DMP Common Standard for Machine-Actionable DMPs

What:

The current RDA DMP Common Standard specification have several issues affecting its usability and possibility for others to contribute. Mainly, not having a single source of truth in the specification causes issues with consistency and community contributions. There are also other issues related to making new releases of the standard, or its website.

goal.

After the project ends I will remain involved in the IG and continue to present and promote the findings, the FAIR principles, RDA and EOSC by submitting abstracts for
conferences and publications to further strengthen and align the different communities with a shared goal to promote open data for research. Further opportunities are provided through my involvement with GOSH (https://openhardware.science/events/) and for example aligning with the OSHWA Certification, which provides an easy and

FAQs

In this context, this call is seeking applications from individuals or organisations related to improving existing technical data frameworks while at the same time leveraging on existing RDA recommendations and outputs. Successful proposals should focus on maintaining, optimising and documenting existing approaches with particular reference to RDA’s Outputs and Recommendations. Special attention should be given to mapping out how to adapt the approaches in the context of EOSC and make relevant documentation available. Proposals are expected to articulate a future vision, for example of how future communities can easily operationalise the frameworks.

Applicants should be working at the vanguard of data or research infrastructure activities in a specific research domain or cluster of domains. Preference in scoring applications is given to active RDA community members.

Successful applications should consider existing recommendations and whether further documentation is needed, for example:  Is the guidance up to date, and ready  for operationalisation; what communities can be involved to update it; are they aligned to new emerging standards, global or European; how do these work in a specific disciplinary context. The aim is to leverage on community resources and review the existing processes for implementation.

The following outcomes should be considered in successful applications:

  • Analysis of existing RDA technical documentation and if it is fit for purpose, where it can be optimised in the context of EOSC.
  • RDA Recommendations: promoting existing recommendations within a disciplinary community with the aim of data sharing in a federated system such as EOSC, for example integration into horizontal or disciplinary infrastructures and interfaces and implementation scenarios for the EOSC federating core.
  • Translating a RDA recommendation into a technical document or a manual and set out how future communities can use it.
  • Facilitating a workshop to discuss and compare EOSC Future technical components in an international context.
  • Technical solutions or design studies demonstrating the suitability of the EOSC catalogue and marketplace for the long-tail of research data.
  • Global approaches including the RDA’s Global Open Research Commons initiative.

This programme is designed to support the engagement of disciplinary groups and take up of services. RDA welcomes applications from people or groups who are committed to RDA, FAIR-ification of data. These can be junior/senior researchers, mid-career data professionals, and data scientists. They can be based in research groups or institutions, or SMEs across Europe, provided they meet the criteria below. Each grant will be awarded for 12,500€ and a total of 2 grants with this focus will be awarded. Work has to be completed by September 2023, the end of the EOSC Future project.

The project proposals will need to be submitted by using “apply now” on this EOSC Future Funding platform. You will  have to describe your project plan, coals, milestones and intended impact in some detail. A consortium consisting of several organisations can apply, but a single legal needs to act as a contractual partner.

You need to submit your application by 20/2/2023 at 16:00.

RDA welcomes applications from people or groups who are committed to RDA, sharing of data, and FAIR-ification[1] of data. These can be junior/senior researchers, mid-career data professionals, and data scientists and anyone working on national or community interoperability guidelines. They can be based in research groups or institutions, or SMEs across Europe, provided they meet the criteria below.

[1] FAIRification comprises of 15 guiding principles outlined by Wilkinson et al (2016) which are aimed at enhancing the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of data. It is a way of connecting and harnessing the power of data being generated to maximize its utility.21 Nov 2022 (Wikipedia)
